A recent report showed that 59% of managers said that they had received no training on how to be a manager before becoming one. According to Peter Cappelli of The Wharton School this stunning statistic is compounded by the fact that most of those managers are now supervising people who were their peers before they were promoted.
🤔 Reflection moment: Are you focusing too much on proving yourself as a new manager, and neglecting the most important thing – your team’s success?
💡 Tip: Instead of trying to be the hero, focus on empowering your team to be the heroes. Here are three things new managers should be doing:
1️⃣ Ask for help: Don’t try to have all the answers. Admit when you don’t know something and ask your team for input.
2️⃣ Focus on strengths, not weaknesses: Instead of trying to fix your team members’ weaknesses, focus on amplifying their strengths.
3️⃣ Give away power: Don’t hoard decision-making authority. Give your team members the autonomy to make decisions and take ownership of their work.
Let’s flip the script on traditional management advice and focus on building a team of heroes, not just a heroic manager!
